    Description

Visit the Ancient Palace of King Nestor and enjoy a stroll around the impressive ruins of Methoni Castle. The tour begins with a visit of the ruins of King Nestor's Palace. Here you will be able to admire the room where the queen took her bath as well as the remains of what must have been a magnificent throne room with a huge hearth in its middle. Since the majority of the roofs and walls were constructed out of wood and stone, today only the stone remains. Even so, the palace remains an impressive example of ancient Greek antiquity. After visiting Nestor’s Palace, proceed by coach to the Methoni village. Methoni has been identified as the city Pedasus, that Homer mentions under the name "ampeloessa" (of vine leaves), as the last of the seven "evnaiomena ptoliethra", that Agamemnon offers Achilles in order to subdue his rage. Along with the rest of Messenia, the town gained its independence from the Spartans in 369 BC. During the 4th century BC, Methoni was elaborately fortified and continued to remain autonomous well into the Imperial Roman era, when it enjoyed the favor of some emperors. During the Byzantine years it continued to remain a remarkable harbor and one of the most important cities of the Peloponnese, seat of a bishopric. Nowadays the walls of the fortress, even though in ruins, continue to be impressive. The castle of Methoni occupies the entire area of the cape and the southwestern coast to the small islet that has also been fortified with an octagonal tower and is protected by the sea on three sides. A deep moat separates the castle from the land and access was by a wooden bridge. The Venetians built on the ancient battlements and added on and repaired it during both periods that they occupied the castle. After a guided tour, you depart Methoni for your return drive back to the pier and your SeaDream yacht.

  • Otranto - Italy's Eastern Door - Otranto 89(USD)
    20 spaces remaining

    Description

Experience a fascinating guided walking tour at the Easternmost point of Italy's "boot". While exploring Otranto you visit the inside of the mysterious Skull Cathedral and pay your respects to the Martyrs of Otranto. Otranto was one of ancient Rome’s leading ports for its trade with Asia Minor and Greece. Under the Byzantines it was an important toehold of the Eastern Empire in Italy. In 1070 it fell under the Normans. Turks attacked and destroyed the city in 1480. The Cathedral which rises at the top of the small town, was built to be one of the most outstanding churches in Apulia. Its crypt was erected in 1088, and the Church was completed maybe a century later. Those were years of full splendor for the small town. Inside the Cathedral you will admire the magnificent mosaic floor, which is one of the largest in Europe and created by Priest Pantaleone between 1163 and 1165. When the attacking Ottomans mercilessly sacked all of Otranto and knocked down the walls of the cathedral, they left this floor intact. See the Chapel of “Beati Martiri” and the crypt; housing the mortal remains of the 800 “martyrs” murdered in 1480. These martyrs were beatified in 1771 and then canonized by Pope Francis in May 2013. Continue walking, as your guide shares stories about the rich history of the Aragonese Castle. This imposing fortress of Otranto has a pentagonal plan, surrounded by a large moat, and punctuated by four towers, three circular and one with the tip directed toward the sea. On the fifth side, opens the drawbridge. Dating back to the IX-XI centuries, you will be awestruck at the beauty within and learn the history. Afterwards you will pause for a moment to enjoy a local favorite pastry, or cool gelato, before returning to the yacht.

    Notes

There are stairs to negotiate on this tour; good walking shoes are recommended. Pass Santa Cesarea Terme with its bizarre “Villa Sticchi” in Arabic style. See the picturesque small town of Castro Marina and Porto Miggiano with its crystal-clear sea water and beautiful bay (photo-stops only, no visits). After the panoramic coastal tour, head to the small village of Scorrano for a visit of the "Azienda Agraria Duca Carlo Guarini", a farming enterprise which is still today run by the descendants of the noble family of the Guarinis. This family originally came from Normandy and settled in Salento in the 11th century A.D. Here you will visit the wine-cellar and the underground-oil mill of the 15th century literally dug out of the stone. At the end of the tour you will enjoy a wine tasting and typical Apulian products before returning to the yacht.

  • Mgarr Harbour, Gozo - The Best of Gozo 109(USD)
    58 spaces remaining

    Description

Discover the essence of Gozo on this intricate weave of heritage, history and religion that makes up the DNA of this tiny island population. This Yachting Land Adventure starts with a drive to the Ggantija Megalithic temples in Xaghra, which are one of the most important archaeological sites in the Maltese islands and on the Unesco World Heritage list. The well-preserved site consists of two temples dating back to between 3600 and 3200 before Christ. Considered as one of the oldest free-standing monuments in the world preceding Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, they represent a phenomenal culture. Enter from the newly constructed interpretation center that helps put a context to this mysterious civilization. From here walk with your guide to explore the site via an external pathway that provides visitors with unique views of the natural landscape that surround Ggantija. Next proceed to Victoria, Gozo’s capital city. This town is still called Rabat by the locals, here you can see the Arab and British influence interwoven so well that to the locals it appears the norm. Take a brief walking tour and also enjoy some free time to visit the Citadel or relax at a local café. Then re-board the coach for a panoramic drive outside of town where you will have a photo stop at the mushroomless Fungus rock and the inland sea, seen in Dwejra, followed by a stop at Ta’Pinu Basilica, a centre of Pilgrimage. The origins of this church date back to 1883, when a peasant woman claimed to have heard the voice of the virgin Mary talking to her in the chapel, later becoming a basilica. Reflect on the discoveries of the beautiful island of Gozo as you return by coach to your waiting yacht.
