  • Little Bay - Pompeii of the Caribbean 149(USD)
    60 spaces remaining

    Description

See the “active” Soufriere Hills Volcano on Montserrat from Plymouth port and learn why it may be called the Pompeii of the Caribbean. No visitor to Montserrat should leave without having an encounter with Montserrat’s most captivating phenomena. On July 18, 1995, the volcano, dormant for four centuries, spewed 20 feet of ash over the southern coast. A series of eruptions eventually caused fast-moving cascades of hot gas and rock that buried the once thriving city of Plymouth. Life, as it was, for Montserrat’s 12,000 residents changed forever. On this excursion you will travel to Jack Boy Hill where you can see the volcano and remnants of WH Bramble Airport now completely buried by volcanic lava flows. Then its on to a lookout point over Plymouth, which is located in what's called the Exclusion Zone, or Zone V; because this area sits in the path of the greatest current volcanic activity and there is limited public access. As you make the way to Plymouth you will pass through small villages and stop in Woodlands for a brief moment at Runaway Ghuat. This is a natural Spring that local myth claims you must drink from this Spring if you want to return to Montserrat. Before entering Plymouth you will have a brief “bird’s eye” view stop at Montserrat Springs; a once proud 4-star hotel. In Plymouth, Safety Officer Norman will show you pictures of former life in Plymouth as you walk past and on top of the buried buildings.Be sure to bring your camera to record this live volcano experience and how the community was buried just like Pompeii.

    10 spaces remaining

    Description

Take a rib boat ride across the harbor to snorkel near a reef while observing reef fish and marine life in the crystal-clear waters off St Barts. Keep an eye out for green sea turtles, an endangered but relatively abundant species in these waters. From the pier side in Gustavia Harbor, you will board an open-air rib boat to begin this excursion. The captain will determine where the best site is to anchor, based upon the weather and sea conditions of the day. If possible, the snorkeling will be just outside the harbor to maximize your snorkeling time. This is where the waters are usually crystal-clear and filled with reef fish. You may spot brilliantly colored angelfish, large groupers, and schools of queen triggerfish. One of the most curious-looking species is the four-eye butterflyfish, which is named for the two dark spots – or false eyes – on the sides of its tail, which are meant to confuse predators. The endangered green sea turtles also gracefully swim these waters too. You may see them feeding on the seagrass and algae on the reef. They are known as being the largest of all sea turtles and the only ones that are herbivores. After your time in the water, you will climb aboard the rib boat ladder for the journey back to the pier and the tender waiting to return you to your SeaDream yacht. Alternatively, you can stay in town and browse the shops to return on your own when ready.
