Scenic Sete & Thau Lagoon
Departing from the port of Sète, enjoy a nice sightseeing of this city influenced by Greek and Roman culture before going up to Mount St Clair. Overlooking Sète, the Mediterranean Sea and Thau Lagoon, you will appreciate the outstanding view from Mount St Clair. You will notice this site is all surrounded by water. For this reason, the French writer Paul Valéry named Sète his native town: “The singular Island”. There, you will visit the cahepl of Notre-Dame-De-La-Salette that was built on the site of an ancient fortress by Louis XIII and has fairly recent frescoes.
Then, drive to Mareseillan via the Coastal Road. There, you will have a photo stop in this small fishing port before continuing to Bouzigues. Bouzigues is a center for oyster and mussel production as far back as the Greeks. The oyster beds themselves are very photogenic and best enjoyed by walking along the path along the edge of the lagoon.
Thau Lagoon is the largest of a string of “étangs” (lakes) that stretch along the Langedoc-Roussillon. The Etang de Thau has an on-going tradition for oyster and mussel farming, providing the area with a rich source for food and wealth.
