Culture & Nature of Rab
The small town of Rab was once encircled by medieval walls in the 12th century. Today, parts of the walls can still be seen along the cliffs, and in a few places close to the harbor. The historic town was founded in Roman times along a narrow tongue of land, so when travelers approached from the sea, they could see it proudly atop the head of the bay.
The tour starts with scenic boat ride to the end of Rab peninsula where, almost hidden in a little bay lies St.Bernardin Monastary. Locals still call it St. Euphemia Monastary and you will have a chance to find out why there are two names of the place. Also, a famous monk painter left his collection here, because of his connections with this island. Visit the historic building with a church inside, painted by Venetian painters throughout the 17th and 18th century. On your way up, there is also Ethnographic Collection of old crafts and sculptures and paintings, together with historic books, called “INCUNABULE” , which means that they were printed in the first 50 years after the Guttenberg printing office opened in Germany, which completely revolutionized the printing industry. While exploring the Monastery grounds guests will have the opportunity to taste a local delicacy, Rab cake. Its main ingredients are almonds and Maraschino liqueur and it is traditionally baked in the shape of a spiral. According to legend, this cake was first served in 1177 to Pope Alexander III when he consecrated the Assumption Cathedral in Rab.
After visiting the Monastery, reboard the boat for a panoramic half an hour cruise prior to arriving to Suha Punta Cove beach. Enjoy a refreshment and an hour of free time for swimming prior to the return cruise to Rab town.
