Footpaths of Madeira
One of the best ways to see the island and get to know Madeira up close is by walking along the scenic Levadas da Madeira. These unique and complex Madeiran Levadas (or aqueducts) were dug by hand into the mountainside in the 19th century to carry water from high up in the mountains down to the fields and villages below.
From the pier, your van will take you to the starting point of this walk at the viewpoint area of Cabo Girão (580 meters above sea level). The second highest sea cliff in the world, Cabo Girao is the highest in Europe and offers a glass platform you can walk upon for incredible panoramic views over Madeira. Rising direct from the sea, this cliffside viewpoint offers breathtaking sights along the coast, over Funchal and scanning over the distant horizon.
From here you will start the idyllic journey through pine forests and passing tiny terraced fields along the Levada. This walking path along the levada (aqueducts) will lead you through beautiful landscapes and natural settings combined with the aromas of pine, sugarcane plantations and wildflowers often discovered flourishing along the running water of the Levada. At the conclusion of this scenic walk you will stop at a local bar for a taste of Madeira’s local “poncha” drink made from rum and honey before returning back to the pier.
