  • San Sebastian - Getaria Medieval Village & Winery 199(USD)
    30 spaces remaining

    Description

The Bay of Biscay imprints its character on San Sebastian where, back in 1476, Juan Sebastián Elcano was born. As the first sailor to circumnavigate the Earth, Juan’s fame is said to equal that of txakoli, the wine synonymous with the Basque Country. Founded in 1989, Getariako Txakolina is a Denomination of Origin for 31 wineries and 150 vine growers that work 402 hectares of vineyard, 91% of which are in coastal areas. Behind this achievement lies a lot of hard work on the part of vine growers, entrepreneurs and organizations, considering that in the 1980’s just 21 hectares were recorded, three in Zarautz and the rest in Getaria. In the previous century the figure was as high as 250 hectares. Getaria is a walled medieval town sitting on a hillside. The silhouette of Mount San Antón, better known as "the Mouse of Getaria", draws special attention and comes out into the sea. Located in the Urola Kosta region, in the historical territory of Gipuzkoa, the town is the birthplace of a sailor and a couturier: Juan Sebastián Elcano and Cristobal Balenciaga. During and after the Middle Ages, when harpoons were still thrown by hand; the people from this village were whale hunters. The local coat of arms even depicts a whale with a harpoon stuck on its back. A guided walk through this village is captivating, passing medieval houses, the port, and the boulevard that leads to the hermitage of San Antón making its history come alive again. Following the walking tour of the village, you will visit a traditional Txakoli winery. Txakoli is a young, fruity white wine, of moderate strength (11º) and with a slight characteristic acidity. This unique & distinctive wine should be served chilled. Enjoy a tasting of Txakoli wines served with a tasting of 2 local seafood pintxos “tapas”.

    Description

Enjoy a panoramic sightseeing drive through the city of A Coruña by heading first to the promenade that runs the length of the city’s coastline. See the 'galleries' along the waterfront that lend A Coruña its 'Crystal City' nickname due to their hundreds of windows. Long ago, the sea was nearer to the city and these windows reflected the sunlight bouncing off the surface of the water. Along the promenade (the longest in Europe) you will pass the Castle of San Anton, built on an island. Once a local fortress, currently the castle is an archaeological museum and is connected to the city by a causeway. This is the only lighthouse of its kind that is still working in its original capacity and also is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the most important monument of the city, it’s part of the coat of arms of A Coruña, together with the bones of Gerion—a giant who was killed by Hercules and lies buried beneath the beacon. Visit the Plaza de Lugo Market in the heart of Coruña, where The Times newspaper once called this market one of the seven wonders of the culinary world. Travel along the coastline past several estuaries with great views of the Galician forest. These typical villages claim they have some of the best beaches in the region. The highlight of this tour is when you discover the different Galician Wines with a sommelier at a local restaurant. Learn how the wines pair with traditional Spanish tapas from the region.
