Description
San Sebastian, or Donostia, was made popular in 1886 by Queen Regent Maria Cristina and has been a favorite among Spanish aristocracy ever since. Today, it is a relaxed family resort and the host of an International Film Festival each September.
As you explore the modern part of the city, you'll see several buildings of significant architectural and historical interest, including the Cathedral of the Buen Pastor and the Town Hall. Your guide will also point out the Palace and Gardens of Miramar, built by Queen Maria Cristina, as well as the Theatre and the luxury hotel named in her honor.
At Mount Igeldo Viewpoint, admire the city's postcard-perfect setting with its oyster-shaped bay of La Concha, framed by Mount Urgull and Mount Igeldo and centered around the Isle of Santa Clara.
The Old Quarter is full of charm and character, ideal for a leisurely stroll among shops, bars, restaurants, and squares. Though the city has been burned to the ground twelve times in its history, one street escaped the fire of 1813 and still holds some of the oldest buildings in San Sebastian, including the Church of San Vicente.
Your tour concludes with a short visit to Hondarribia, near the French border. This picturesque town is divided into two sections. The upper town is the medieval district, featuring narrow alleyways, carved eaves, and traditional balconies. The lower town is a quaint fishing quarter. A brief walking tour through the medieval section includes a visit to the historic Parador, once a defensive tower and now a charming hotel.
