Romantic Ragusa

Leave Pozzallo pier by coach and drive towards Ragusa town. Ragusa is divided into two, there is the new town and the old town called “Ibla” (that in Sicilian language means "lying below"). Ragusa Ibla is the hub from which the city of Ragusa developed. It is located in the eastern part of the city, on a hill of abt 400 metres above sea level. Upon arrival you will leave the coach to start the walking tour. After the earthquake of 1693, the city was rebuilt with works, buildings and monuments of late Baroque style. Ragusa Ibla contains over fifty churches and palaces in the Baroque style. First you will see the Portal of St. George, which is the symbol of the city of Ragusa, built in Catalan-Gothic style in the second half of the fourteenth century. The ancient church of San Giorgio in Ragusa Ibla, was modified by Earl Godfrey who expanded and enriched the early church. The portal is the only remainder after the terrible earthquake of 1693. Then, discover the Ibleo Garden, the oldest of the four main gardens of the town, built in 1858 by a group of local nobles and a large part of the people who worked for free for the realization of the work. The entrance consists of a magnificent avenue flanked by numerous palm trees. Inside the churches of St.Vincenzo Ferreri, the Church of St. James and the Church of the Capuchins. Afterwards see the Church of St. Joseph, built in 1756 on the initiative of the Benedictine nuns, full of carvings and sculptures; Palazzo La Rocca, built around 1765 by Baron La Rocca S. Ippolito. Arrive at the Cathedral square and see the facade of the palace “Conversation Club” and St. George Cathedral, built between 1744 and 1775, according to the plans of the famous architect Rosario Gagliardi. On the wooden doors, some precious sculptural decorations, in six panels, with scenes from the martyrdom of St. George, carved by Vincenzo Fiorello in 1793. After the walking tour some free time before returning to pier by coach.
