San Sebastian & Hondarribia

San Sebastian & Hondarribia

San Sebastian was made popular in 1886 by Queen Regent Maria Cristina and has been popular with Spanish aristocracy ever since. It is now a relaxed family resort and home of an International Film Festival every September. As you tour the modern part of the city, you will see several large buildings of architectural and historical interest including the Cathedral of the Buen Pastor and the Town Hall. The Palace and Gardens of Miramar, built by Queen Maria Cristina, the Theatre and the luxury hotel named after the Queen will all be pointed out by your guide.

At Mount Igeldo Viewpoint you can admire the city's picture-postcard setting and its oyster-shaped bay of La Concha, protected by Mount Urgull and Mount Igueldo and presided over by the Isle of Santa Clara.
In the Old Quarter you will find a perfect place for strolling amidst a picturesque shops, bars, restaurants and squares.
The city has been burnt to the ground twelve times in its history; however, one street was not destroyed by the fire of 1813. This street contains some of the oldest buildings in the city including the Church of San Vicente.

Your tour is rounded off with a short visit to Hondarribia, near the French border. This delightful town is divided into two parts – the upper town is the medieval district where small alleyways contain old houses with carved eaves and wonderful balconies. The lower section is an innocent fishermen's quarter. A brief walking tour in the medieval town will take you to historic Parador in a wonderful medieval building - once a defender tower against invasions from France and now an atmospheric hotel before returning to the ship.
