Behind the Scenes of Jerusalem - Day 1
Explore the Jewish side of Jerusalem – the most important Jewish city in the world. Discover the Jewish connection to the city from ancient times through to the present day, visiting the main Jewish sites with an added aspect of a behind-the-scenes tour at Yad Vashem and lunch in a local Jewish home.
See the unique memorial sites at Yad VaShem and take a moment to consider, reflect and connect. This exclusive behind the scenes tour provides a fascinating glimpse to the stories behind the displayed diaries, photographs and artifacts. The tour in Yad Vashem will be conducted by a Yad Vashem's professional guide.
Next, enter the Israel Museum's Shrine of the Book, where the fragile Dead Sea Scrolls and precious Aleppo Codex are displayed. Further glimpse into the past with a look at the 2nd Temple Period model of Jerusalem. Enjoy a walk through the Jerusalem-stone-paved streets of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City.
See the Cardo, a historic Roman road that was once the main thoroughfare of the city. Pass by yeshivas (schools of religious learning) and synagogues, including the Hurva Synagogue, a distinctive synagogue with a story of endurance. Visit the Wailing Wall, the sole remnant of the 2nd Temple. The 2000-year-old wall was built by King Herod as part of the 2nd Temple's expansion, and ever since the Romans destroyed the 2nd Temple in 70 CE, Jews have prayed facing the holy wall.
Enjoy lunch at a local’s families’ home and a snack of beigale, the traditional Jerusalem bagel spiced with hyssop. Have it with fresh-squeezed orange juice, the classic refreshing beverage of choice before returning to the yacht in Ashdod.
