Volcano Hiking

One of the best ways to discover the beauty of the Azorean islands is hiking. This trail will take you to Capelinhos, the area were the last volcanic eruption of the Azores took place. Also visit the Volcano Interpretation Centre, an informative, educational and scientific mission, with a special emphasis on Capelinhos Volcano eruption and the formation of the archipelago, but also related to the various kinds of volcanic activity in the world.

Departure by bus from the pier in the direction of Cabeço Verde to start the hike. Cabeço Verde is one of the volcanic cones of the Capelo Peninsula in the west of Faial. Along the trail it is possible to overlook Praia do Norte, Cabeço do Fogo, Morro de Castelo Branco and the other volcanic cones of the Capelo Peninsula. Pass by Furna Ruim, a 55 metre deep lava cave. Throughout the way see local vegetation such as the Azores Laurel, Holly, Azores Blueberry and Azores Heather and pass by the Algar do Caldeirão (cave). Cross a gravel trail and go up the stairway towards Cabeço do Canto, from where you will see the landscape of the Capelinhos Volcano and admire the remains of the last volcanic eruption in the Azores during 1957. From there you will descend and visit the Interpretative Centre of Capelinhos Volcano before returning to the yacht at the pier.

Notes: Please wear comfortable outdoor clothes and trekking footwear (dress in layers and bring a rain protection), hat, sunscreen, water and energy bar. Trail level of difficulty = medium approximately 1.9 MI (3 KM) for 2h30min. Not recommended for guests with any walking limitations and you should be in good physical condition. A minimum participation is required to operate all Yachting Land Adventures and some have limited capacity. All adventures in the SeaDream Yachting Land Adventures program are subject to change.
