Magnificent Carcassonne – A Medieval City

Set high on a hill, Carcassonne’s ancient walled city is one of Europe’s most remarkable medieval fortresses, renowned for its double ring of ramparts and 52 towers. Departing from Sète, travel by air conditioned coach for approximately 90 minutes to reach this extraordinary UNESCO listed citadel, where residents still live within its fortified walls. Upon arrival, begin with a guided tour featuring the impressive Narbonne Gate and the Lists, the walkway between the two defensive walls. Walking along these historic paths offers the sensation of stepping back through 20 centuries of history.
Your journey proceeds with an outside visit to the Basilica of Saint Nazaire, considered one of the old city’s finest treasures. Begun in 1096, this Romanesque masterpiece showcases a magnificent barrel vaulted nave and beautifully preserved architectural details. Nearby stands the Count’s Castle, built in the 12th century by the Viscounts of Carcassonne, offering further insight into the city’s medieval past. After the guided portion, enjoy ample free time to wander the narrow cobblestone streets, browse local shops, and choose from a variety of restaurants for lunch at your leisure.
Carcassonne’s walled city is a delight to explore independently, with its maze of medieval passageways, artisan boutiques, and atmospheric squares. Whether you prefer shopping, photography, or simply soaking in the historic ambiance, the four hours of free time allow you to experience the citadel at your own pace. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the terrain includes cobblestones and gentle inclines. At the end of the afternoon, rejoin your coach and guide for the scenic 90 minute return drive to Sète and your SeaDream yacht.
