Magnificent Egeskov Castle

Magnificent Egeskov Castle

A scenic drive through Funen's picturesque countryside, known as the 'Garden of Denmark', leads you to Egeskov, Europe's best-preserved Renaissance water castle.

The castle was erected in 1554 and is considered to be one of Europe’s best preserved Renaissance water castles – so called because the construction rests on oak pillars driven down into the lakebed. The civil unrest in the 1500s caused many noblemen to build fortified castles as their homes. At Egeskov, thick double walls, water on all sides and a drawbridge, scalding holes, arrow slits and artillery ports were commissioned, to prepare the castle for ‘visitors’. The welcome you receive today will be noticeably warmer.

The Bille family has owned this castle since 1784 and has now opened its gates to the public. Explore the castle’s interior with your guide, before enjoying free time at your own leisure to explore the many opportunities here. On site you will find a vintage car and motorcycle museum, a museum of Danish Fire & Rescue Services, an agricultural museum, a Grocers Museum, and an old smithy.
The park-like grounds cover 49 acres of land and are divided into several themed gardens. The Renaissance garden features fountains and topiary figures. The fuchsia garden, one of the largest in Europe, features 104 different species. Other gardens include an English Garden, a water garden, an herb garden, a vegetable garden, and many more. The gardens also feature four hedge mazes – feel free to wander through them. You can even try treetop walking in the old birch. Or simply sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee at the café where you can enjoy the spectacular scenery.
