WWII & the Jutland Resistance

WWII & the Jutland Resistance

Embark on a guided tour through Denmark's WWII history, exploring Bangsbo Fort's German bunkers and Danish naval additions, followed by a visit to the Danish Resistance Museum, housed in a charming manor barn.

Delve into the dark years of Denmark’s history during its occupation during World War II. Travel up the hill to Bangsbo Fort and explore part of a range of defences set up by the Germans to defend the port of Frederikshavn, a port of strategic significance as it guaranteed the safe transport of their supplies of materials from Norway. Bangsbo Fort, now a museum, displays the conditions under which the German soldiers stationed in the bunker lived. Visitors can tour the original quarters, see the huge canons, and peruse the variety of wartime artifacts in the museum.

The museum documents not only the bunkers usage during WWII but also the transformation they underwent as the Danish Navy took over and reinforced them to play a part in the cold war. To this day, the area in which the museum is located, still belongs to the Royal Danish Navy, and if orders are given, the museum are to hand over the area within a day.

From here you travel a short distance to the Danish Resistance Museum, centered around the resistance movement in Jutland and the daily life of the civilian population under the occupation. The museum displays photos, stories, and artifacts from that time. The museum itself is contained in the barn of a charming manor house, inaugurated in 2000, shortly after an extensive refurbishment.
