The Incredible Brijuni Archipelago, 14 green jewels of the northern Adriatic, is considered Croatia´s most beautiful National Parks. North-west of Pula, separated from the mainland by the 3 km wide Fažana channel, the archipelago covers an area of 736 hectares, numerous picturesque coves and inlets forming a beautiful 44 km long coast. A mild Med. climate enables more than 680 different local and exotic plants to grow here and to be the home of some 150 species of birds. Lovers of historic buildings will immediately admire the many archaeological finds, from the Neolithic settlement, Illyrian ruins and many ancient monuments. Today there is also a safari park on the Island of Veli Brijun. The Park was added in 1978 when the islands were Tito´s private retreat and it is now home to various exotic species which live in enclosed spaces, while peacocks and pheasants roam freely, sharing the paths with visitors. A ride on a tourist train will take you to the Safari Park showing you also the remains of Byzantine fortifications, as well as Roman Summer Residence from 1st century AD.
