The Superb Site of Delphi

The Superb Site of Delphi

Depart the pier in Galaxidi by air-conditioned motor coach and travel along a winding mountain road toward Delphi. The journey leads inland to the slopes of Mount Parnassus, where the ancient sanctuary was established at an elevation of approximately 700 meters. On arrival, begin a guided exploration of the archaeological site, once considered by the ancient Greeks to be the centre of the world. Enter the Sanctuary of Apollo and follow the paved Sacred Way toward the Doric Temple of Apollo, where the high priestess Pythia delivered the oracles that shaped political and religious decisions across the Greek world.

Continue through the sanctuary to view the theatre and the stadium, both associated with the Pythian Games, one of the major athletic festivals of ancient Greece. Near the entrance lies the Kastalian Fountain, where ritual purification took place before sacred ceremonies. Across the road stands the Marmaria complex, or Sanctuary of Athena, where the circular Tholos remains one of the most recognizable structures of Delphi’s archaeological landscape.

The visit continues at the Delphi Archaeological Museum, home to an important collection of sculptures and artefacts recovered from the sanctuary. Among the highlights is the celebrated Bronze Charioteer, one of the finest surviving examples of classical Greek bronze sculpture. After exploring the museum, rejoin your motor coach for the return journey through the mountainous landscape back to the pier in Galaxidi.

Notes: Guests must be able to enter and exit the vehicle without assistance. Visiting the archaeological site involves extensive walking along paved paths within the archaeological site and museum areas. To appreciate the Sanctuary of Apollo, guests need to walk uphill along the gently sloped path known as the Sacred Way. Transfers between the pier and the Delphi area are approximately 1 hour each way. Casual clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and guests may wish to wear a hat for additional sun protection. Shade within the archaeological site is limited, particularly during warmer months, as much of the sanctuary is located in open areas exposed to the sun.
