The Quill Quest: Into Statia’s Sleepy Volcano
Lace up your boots and set off on an unforgettable hiking adventure to the rim of the Quill, Statia's sleeping volcano. Led by a local guide along the easiest trail to the top, you will discover the island's natural history up close, from the tropical forest that blankets the slopes to the flora and fauna that call it home.
Your journey begins at the pier, where you will meet your guide and take transportation to Rosemary Lane, the starting point of the hike. After a short briefing, the trail begins and the island's tropical vegetation closes in around you. As you climb uphill along the forest path, your guide brings the landscape to life, sharing the story of Statia's natural history and pointing out the plants and wildlife along the way. Every bend in the trail reveals a little more of the island's character, and the climb is as rewarding as the destination.
At the top, the Quill's crater rim opens up before you. Take in the views, pause to refresh and recharge, and do not forget your camera to capture the moment. Then retrace your steps down the same trail, with the forest and your guide's stories for company, before returning by vehicle to the pier with an unforgettable sense of having stood on the edge of Statia's sleeping volcano.
Notes: This is a moderate-activity hike requiring intermittent effort, covering a total distance of 1.6 km (1 mile) and including walking medium distances over uneven surfaces, inclines and natural steps. Guests should be in good physical health and comfortable walking uphill. Forest trails can be slippery or muddy after rain, with exposed roots and natural steps, and the tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. Hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes and long pants are required, and guests should bring water, sun protection and walking sticks. Sunday is a quiet day on Statia: most shops and attractions are closed, and the island is noticeably calmer, with church services taking place, so guests should expect limited shopping and sightseeing outside the tour.
This Yachting Land Adventure must be confirmed no later than 72 hours (3 days) prior to arrival in port; bookings may still be accepted after this deadline, up to the time of arrival, if space is available. Please note that cancellations made within 72 hours of arrival in port are non‑refundable.
