Wine Lovers and Saint Emilion
Wine Lovers and Saint Emilion
SeaDream introduces you to the Saint Emilion Region of France with a guided visit of the village and underground, plus a wine cellar visit and tasting at Chateau Soutard.
There can be no better place to start a visit of this beautiful region than at the UNESCO World Heritage Classified Saint
Emilion village. This is the heartland of the Merlot grape, producing delicious, rich, and famous wines. The vines on the "hill with a thousand châteaux", reach right up to Saint-Emilion's 13th century town walls and the surrounding moat dug out of solid rock. Members of the local wine brotherhood, the Jurats, proclaim the vintage banns in much the same way as their ancestors did during the reign of Richard the Lion heart.
Visit the main monuments of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Collegiate Church and its magnificent cloister from the 12th century, the ramparts, the market place, and the monolithic church or underground church from the 9th and 12th centuries. Consecrated to the holy hermit by the Benedictine monks, this is unique in Europe for its size. It represents a stunning transformation of the natural caves in the cliff face that have been used for religious purposes from prehistoric times to the present day. Beside the church, the catacombs include a charnel house and a number of sepulchers from the 11th and 12th centuries. The Hermitage was constructed by transforming a natural grotto.
Strolling the streets, you will also see the Cadene Gate and the King's Tower. After a guided visit, you will have some time at leisure for shopping and independent exploration.
Leaving the village, continue with a short transfer to the impressive Classified wine estate of Château SOUTARD. Their wine making techniques will be explained during a visit of the cellars, and follow with a wine tasting before returning to Bordeaux and the yacht.
Notes: Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to steep and slippery
cobblestoned streets in St-Emilion village, in addition to steps and stairs at the wine estate.
