Caen - City of William The Conqueror

Caen - City of William The Conqueror

Located between land and sea, CAEN, the capital of Lower Normandy, is a vibrant, buzzing city blending a rare wealth of heritage and culture. We start the visit by driving by coach the short distance in to the city center.

Founded by William the Conqueror, of Normandy's Viking dynasty, in the 11th Century, Caen has preserved the splendour and radiance endowed upon it by the the Dukes of Normandy over time. Abbeys, the castle, as well as private town houses, universities and other academies all attest to the development of the city through the centuries, even after the terrible bombings of 1944. Rising from the ashes like the phoenix, the symbol of its university, Caen has also safeguarded its impressive architectural heritage, remarkably spared by World War II bombings. We will make a walking visit of the historical town. Discover the Ducal Castle, considered as one of the largest fortified enclosures in Europe. Your guide leads you through the stronghold built by William the Conqueror. We then walk to St Peters Square: admire the old church skirted by beautiful private mansions of the 16th century: the half-timbered facade of the Quatrans House, the Renaissance courtyard of Escoville Manor... Through St Peters Street we reach the Men's Abbey, built in 1063 by William. We pass by the romantic ruins of Saint Etienne le vieux and then explore Saint-Etienne Abbey Church, a gem of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles which houses the tomb of its founder William. At the conclusion of the tour we return to the yacht by coach, or you may choose to stay a little longer to soak up the charm of this attractive city.
