The British Virgin Islands, part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, boast over 50 small islands and cays along Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost van Dyke. While there are many incredible diving spots among these secluded isles, our top three picks are chosen for their calm, clear waters, minimal currents, and unseemingly endless freedom to explore coral gardens, seamounts, and abundant marine life beneath the surface.
Tortola, British Virgin Islands
A tiny island just 60 miles from Puerto Rico, Tortola offers some incredible dive spots for both the novice and the experienced. The most famous dive site is where the RMS Rhone shipwreck lies undisturbed since 1867, off nearby Salt Island. Consider diving (or snorkeling) Tortola's Brewer's Bay off Tortola's northern shore.
Norman Island, British Virgin Islands
Located on Norman Island’s leeward side, Angelfish Reef is home to an incredible cast of underwater characters. With a labyrinth of rocky canyons and ridges that wind their way across a sandy bottom, this colorful site is well protected from outside currents, making it ideal for divers of all experience levels. Discover Ringdove Rock, a sea mount covered in swaths of coral and sponge, gorgonians and sea fans, crinoids and anemones. On Norman Island’s north side, Spyglass Wall parallels the shoreline and offers 6- to 18-meter drops. Named after the hill on Norman Island where pirates once kept watch for merchant ships, the wall is covered in purple tube sponges, massive sea fans, and colorful coral.
St. Thomas
A distinctive island paradise that lies 50 miles east of Puerto Rico, St. Thomas's volcanic coastline showcases a wealth of dive sites, healthy reef life, and some memorable underwater topography. The island’s volcanic origins have left behind maze of caves, caverns, and lava tubes to explore beneath the sea, providing the perfect environment for more than 400 species of fish and several species of sea turtles.
