Arrive in Hong Kong past Kowloon as the Symphony of Lights plays from your own deck, overnighting in Victoria Harbour with time for dim sum and the Peak tram, before continuing to Xiamen, where car-free Gulangyu, a UNESCO site, drifts with banyan shade and piano notes from open windows. Trace the Ryukyu chain south through Ishigaki's Kabira Bay, its water layered in three shades of green and rimmed by manta rays, then Miyakojima, famous for the pale turquoise locals call Miyako Blue and arced by the Irabu Bridge. In Okinawa, the vermilion halls of Shurijo Castle, a UNESCO site, recall the vanished Ryukyu Kingdom over bittermelon champuru and awamori, while Amami Oshima's UNESCO mangrove tunnels give way to forest trails where a rare black rabbit, found nowhere else, roams. Walk beneath the thousand-year cedars of Yakushima's UNESCO-listed forest before Kagoshima, where Sakurajima trails smoke across the bay beside volcano-framed Sengan-en. Uwajima follows, a call almost no other ship makes, its original castle keep one of only twelve original towers in Japan. Stops at Kobe, Fuji-shadowed Tagonoura, and Yokohama, past Sankeien's lotus ponds and Japan's largest Chinatown, lead onward to Tokyo, where your voyage concludes amid the city's electric, endless energy.
