Brunei is the last of the old sultanates: fabulously wealthy, serene and green. Glide by boat through Kampong Ayer, the world's largest water village, a labyrinth of stilted houses on the Brunei River, then marvel at the gold-domed Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque mirrored in its own lagoon. Take a small- boat safari up the mangrove creeks to spot proboscis monkeys and saltwater crocodiles at dusk. A gilded, unhurried realm that few travellers ever reach.
