A small Catholic town on Flores's eastern tip that holds one of Asia's most extraordinary religious traditions, a centuries-old Holy Week procession, rooted in 16th-century Portuguese missionary heritage, that still draws pilgrims from across the region each Easter. Outside of that week, quiet beaches and a slower pace define a town most visitors pass en route to Komodo further west. A genuinely singular pocket of Portuguese-Catholic culture, marooned in the middle of Muslim-majority Indonesia.
