Satonda Island, Indonesia

A tiny, uninhabited island off the north coast of Sumbawa hides a genuine geological oddity at its center, a saltwater crater lake, connected to the sea by seepage rather than any visible channel, ringed by fossilized coral microbialites found in only a handful of places worldwide. The surrounding reef, largely untouched, shelters turtles and reef sharks in clear, current-free water. One of the strangest and least-visited natural formations anywhere on this itinerary.
