Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, smolders directly across the bay from the city center, close enough that ash occasionally dusts the streets, a genuinely dramatic backdrop for an otherwise relaxed southern city. Ibusuki, a short drive south, buries visitors in naturally heated black sand for one of Japan's more unusual spa treatments. Satsuma sweet potato shochu, distilled locally for centuries, and a round of golf in the mild southern climate round out a city that lives, quite literally, in a volcano's shadow.
