One of Japan's four former Imperial Navy ports still shows its industrial heritage at the Maizuru Red Brick Park, a row of late-19th-century naval warehouses now repurposed as museums and cafes, a rare survival from an era most Japanese cities have long since redeveloped. The nearby Tango Peninsula's rugged coastline and terraced rice fields running to the sea are among the least-visited stretches of the Sea of Japan coast. A round of golf and a genuinely restorative onsen soak round out a working naval town with real character.
