Atauro Island, Timor-Leste

A short but rough crossing from Dili delivers some of the most biodiverse reef in the world, surveys here have recorded more fish species per site than almost anywhere else on the planet. The island's isolation has kept both its coral and its traditional way of life largely intact, small fishing villages, a handful of guesthouses and very little else. Frigatebirds and other seabirds nest along the cliffs above beaches that see barely any visitors at all. One of Southeast Asia's last genuinely undiscovered dive destinations.
