Placencia, Belize

A barefoot fishing village at the tip of a sixteen-mile peninsula, home to what Guinness once called the world's narrowest street. Belize's barrier reef, the largest in the Western Hemisphere, lies just offshore for snorkeling among sharks, turtles and coral gardens at Laughing Bird Caye. Upriver, the Monkey River delivers howler monkeys, crocodiles and a heron-thick mangrove within a single morning's excursion, while a Creole and Garifuna kitchen turns out fresh lobster and coconut rice back in the village. Slow, unpolished and entirely unhurried.
