A Victorian-era shrimping town, credited as the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry, Fernandina's historic downtown of gingerbread houses sits at one end of a barrier island otherwise given over to championship golf courses and serious spa resorts. Kingsley Plantation, a short drive south, tells a fuller history of the Sea Islands, while shorebirds and wading birds crowd the marshes behind the dunes. A genuinely restorative stop, in every sense of the word.

I hate Commercial Cruises. So I reluctantly signed up for a SeaDream, and after a week on the boat, I could not think of one thing that was not done to perfection. The food was great, the staff was spectacular, and having only 50 couples made this a private yacht cruise.
