A small island in the Bay of Biscay, Île d'Yeu sits off the Vendée coast of western France, reachable only by ferry. Port Joinville, its principal harbor and only town, spreads along the north shore in a curve of whitewashed houses and blue shutters, where SeaDream drops anchor. Fishing boats still unload their catch each morning onto the quay, feeding a market of crab, langoustine, and sole that runs throughout the year. The island's south coast turns wild and rocky, marked by granite cliffs, the ruined 14th century Vieux Château, and the sheltered inlet of Port de la Meule, once a stronghold for tuna and sardine boats. Inland, the island reveals a quieter character, with stone farmhouses, narrow lanes, and the Romanesque Église Saint-Sauveur, seat of the island's original village. Bicycles remain the preferred way to explore, tracing routes past dolmens dating to the Neolithic era and a 19th century lighthouse that has guided ships through the Bay of Biscay for over 150 years.
