Once the capital of the Western Roman and Byzantine empires, Ravenna guards the finest mosaics outside Istanbul. Stand beneath the gold-ground dome of the Basilica of San Vitale, then the star-strewn ceiling of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, sights that stopped even Cole Porter in his tracks. Dante wrote his final lines here and lies in a quiet tomb near San Francesco, while the Po Delta's wetlands just beyond town shelter flamingos and herons among the reeds.
