Beaufort, North Carolina, United States

North Carolina's third-oldest town keeps a genuinely well-preserved colonial waterfront, and just offshore, wild horses still roam the dunes of Shackleford Banks, descendants, local lore holds, of shipwrecked Spanish mustangs. Blackbeard met his end in these waters in 1718, a history the town's maritime museum tells with real relish, while shorebirds crowd the barrier island beaches nearby. A quieter, history-rich alternative to the Outer Banks further north.
