Dunk Island, Queensland, Australia

A rainforest-clad Great Barrier Reef island once made famous by the writer E.J. Banfield, whose Confessions of a Beachcomber turned his hermit's life here into a bestseller. Ulysses butterflies, their wings an improbable electric blue, drift through the island's walking trails in numbers found almost nowhere else. Cyclone Yasi flattened the resort in 2011 and nature has largely reclaimed the island since, leaving a quieter, wilder Dunk than Banfield himself might recognize.
