The world's largest sand island, and the only place on earth where rainforest grows on pure sand, K'gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) is a genuine geological anomaly. Lake McKenzie's silica-white shore and impossibly clear, mineral-pure water rank among Australia's most photographed swimming holes, while the island's wild dingo population is among the country's most genetically pure. Traditional owners, the Butchulla people, whose name for the island was restored in 2023, still guide much of what visitors learn here. Rainforest, desert dunes and a perched lake, all on one island.
