Wessel Islands, Northern Territory, Australia

A remote, largely uninhabited chain off the tip of Arnhem Land that carries evidence of Australia's first real contact with the outside world, Macassan fishermen from what is now Indonesia sailed here to harvest sea cucumber centuries before European settlement, leaving tamarind trees and pottery shards still being found today. Pristine reef and empty white beaches ring islands that see barely any visitors of any kind. One of the least-known corners of the entire Australian coast.
