The Latvian capital holds the largest collection of Art Nouveau architecture anywhere in Europe, entire streets of swirling facades, gargoyles and sculpted faces best explored on foot through the Alberta iela quarter. The medieval Old Town sits a short walk away, UNESCO-listed and dense with Hanseatic history, while the vast Central Market, set inside a run of former Zeppelin hangars, is one of the continent's great food halls. Latvia's own spa and wellness tradition runs deep, not far away, the beach resort town of Jurmala has drawn health-seekers for over a century. A grand, underrated Baltic capital.
