Ports

  • Civitavecchia (Rome)

Civitavecchia is a major port located in Rome, primarily utilized for maritime transportation of goods, as well as a fishing port. The commune’s name means “ancient town” and is one of the “Motorways of the Sea” in the Mediterranean, functioning as one of the main links between the mainland of Italy and Sardinia. The ancient name of the port was “Centumcellae,” first mentioned in a letter written by Pliny the Younger in 107 A.D., although scholars debate on whether the name was about the number of rooms of the Trajan Villa, or the number of natural creeks on the coast. Civitavecchia is a part of the Lazio Territory, an area which was confirmed to have social groups since pre-historic times, and the modern town was built over a pre-existing settlement of the Etruscan people in 107-108 B.C.E. (who debated to have founded Rome). In the beginning of the 2nd century, the harbor and town of Centumcellae were simultaneously developed by Emperor Trajan in the territory of Aquae Tauri. As the town became more popular for ships traveling westbound, the Thermal Baths were constructed on the hill of Ficoncella. Centumcellae flourished in the Imperial Age, and by 538 A.D., it had become a Byzantine stronghold. In 728 A.D., it became a member of the Papal States. The Saracens raided Centumcellae many times in the 9th century, prompting Pope Leo VII to have a newer and more secure settlement built by 854. The town, then known as Civita Vetula, was under the rule of several lords, and the Popes temporarily lost control during the French Rule in 1798-1815. In 1870 it entered the Kingdom of Italy. Civitavecchia was severely damaged during WWII, destroying many of the ancient monuments including Forte Michelangelo, which would be rebuilt in the 1950’s. Popular points of interest include the Forte Michelangelo, Terme Taurine, and Cattedrale di San Francesco. There is a wealth of Roman and Vatican architecture and tourists are encouraged to visit many of the museums and take the cultural tours available in this important sea port.

  • Capri

Capri may very well be the most popular island on the planet. It is a beautiful Italian island in the Tyrrhenian Sea just off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Bay of Naples. Capri town is the island’s main population center. The island has two harbors, Marina Piccola and Marina Grande (the main port of the island). The separate village of Anacapri is located high on the hills to the west. From there, visitors can continue up to the highest point Mt. Solero. Besides some simply amazing shopping boutiques, the island has so much to offer including the famous Grotta Azzurra, Villa Jovis, Giardini di Augusto, Certosa di San Giacomo, Villa San Michele di Axel Munthe and the uniquely shaped Faraglioni rocks. SeaDream has put together most of the sights into one adventure called “Discovering the Island of Love” Kindly check the Land Adventures tab for more information. There’s also some great hikes available on the island, check with the activities team on board for details.

  • Positano

Positano is one of the most picturesque villages along the UNESCO awarded Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana), in Campania, Italy. The town itself is perched on an enclave on the face of a hill and winds down towards the sea. This incredible setting has been enjoyed by writers, movie stars and millions of tourist each year. John Steinbeck visited in the 50's and stated “Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” The movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" and several others have been shot on location here. Besides the incredibly romantic atmosphere, it offers excellent shopping, beautiful beaches, hiking trails and a few world recognized and award winning hotels such as Le Sirenuse and Il San Pietro di Positano amongst others. As large coaches cannot navigate down to the pier, only private arrangements are available here. You can book a very nice sedan or van to take you to the neighboring villages or even to Pompeii. As SeaDream anchors just of the pier, you may have the opportunity to access the yachts marina and water toys (conditions and local approval permitting).

  • Taormina (Etna) Sicily

SeaDream yachts anchor in the bay of Giardini Naxos and offer fantastic views of recently awarded UNESCO Natural Site of Mt. Etna (2013) as well as Taormina perched on the cliffside. Shuttle bus service has been arranged to transport guests from Giardini Naxos to the entrance gate of Taormina town. For the SeaDream active guests, office led hikes and bike rides could also transport you to Taormina town or continue up to Castelmola which provides amazing views of the surrounding areas. Perhaps the “must do” adventure here would be to ascend Mt. Etna with your fellow SeaDreamers. Kindly check the Land Adventure tab for the specifics. Other options include an incredible and authentic feast at the Godfather Villa. This “SeaDream Exclusive” Land Adventure requires a high minimum to operate, but it’s worth every penny! As we are anchored and if conditions allow, we will offer water sports both in the morning and in the afternoon. Multo Bene!

  • At Sea

  • Kotor

Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro. The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by an impressive city wall built by the Republic of Venice and the Venetian influence remains dominant among the architectural influences. In 1979 the Bay of Kotor, City of Kotor and the surrounding territory have been listed in the UNESCO Heritage as a Cultural Site. SeaDream usually navigates close by the small islands of St. George and Our Lady of the Reef. The Bay of Kotor stretches 28 km and is one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea. It is sometimes called the southern-most fjord in Europe (though it is actually a submerged river canyon called a ria). SeaDream typically docks steps away from the town. SeaDream has arranged a few different Yachting Land Adventures. One of them is a walking discovery and the other will show you the heritage and countryside of Montenegro. For the active guests, there’s incredible biking along the coast as well as a hike up to the fortress. On occasion, SeaDream may dock in the bay and tender directly to the town. We regret that watersports are not allowed in this protected area.

  • Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik (Pearl of the Adriatic) is one of the most prominent destinations in the Adriatic Sea. It lies in the region of Dalmatia and was awarded World Unesco Heritage status in 1979. The population is approximately 43,000 and is considered to be among the 10 best medieval walled cities in the world. SeaDream anchors off the walled city as a port of call and tenders directly to the town gate. If you check the land adventures here, you will find that there are many different excursions to consider in this incredible town. Dubrovnik is also an embarkation point on select voyages. On these occasions, the yacht is docked at the cruise terminal.

  • Mljet National Park

Mljet is Croatia's greenest island with its Mediterranean vegetation, clear and clean sea and gentle sandy shoreline and is considered to be one of the most beautiful of the Croatian islands. Mljet National Park is a large area covering the entire of the northwest end of Mljet. Within the park there are two salt water lakes. The lake area is about two miles long and in the large lake there is a small island called Sveta Marija where a Benedictine monastery was erected in the 12th century. SeaDream has designed the perfect land adventure for guests to make the most out of this destination.

  • Korcula

Korčula may be the actual birthplace of Marco Polo! This is an island in the Adriatic Sea, in Southern Dalmatia and is considered by our guests as one of their favorites. One activity offered sells out every time so book early the Buggy Safari. As SeaDream typically anchors off Korcula expects the water toys to be used from the marina platform. As the island is relatively flat, this is a great biking destination as well.

  • Hvar

Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. The island of Hvar is somewhat unusual as it is blessed with a large fertile coastal plain and fresh water springs. Its hillsides are covered in pine forests, with vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields in the agricultural areas. The climate is characterized by mild winters and warm summers with many hours of sunshine. Guests have an option to kayak down the coastline on one of our land adventures or take an independent hike up to the fortress to have some incredible views of the picturesque harbor. You also have an option to bike across the island to Starigrad and meet up with the other guests on the land adventure called “The best of Both Worlds".

  • Rovinj

Rovinj is a popular tourist resort in Croatia situated on the north Adriatic Sea. It is situated on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula and remains as one of the last true fishing ports. SeaDream has arranged some unique land adventure options including; Porec, a Touch of History, Culture & The Family Tradition of Wine Making, and the very popular Searching For Truffles in the Countryside. SeaDream is scheduled to anchor to offer water sports activities from the marina (Permission and conditions pending).

  • Venice

Venice has been known as the "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". Luigi Barzini, writing in The New York Times, described it as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man". Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities. Founded in the 5th century, the city stretches across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic. In 1987 Venice and its Lagoon was inscribed as a UNESCO Heritage site. SeaDream typically docks at the San Basilio pier after navigating by the famous St. Mark’s Square down the grand canal. With its yacht stature, SeaDream vessels are amongst the very few commercial vessels that can navigate this famous waterway. SeaDream does offer Land Adventures when overnighting. You can also contact our destination specialists should you need a private arrangement, transfer or hotel recommendation.

  • Venice - Romantic Gondola Evening Serenade

    Description

Since Venice began there have always been gondoliers. By the 11th century most were in private service with patrician families. There were about 10,000 gondoliers in Venice in the 16th century, and today there are fewer than 400. Great skill is required to steer a boat through the narrow canals of Venice. Each gondola is 36 feet long, 4 feet wide and weighs 1,100 pounds. A gondolier serves a 10-year apprenticeship under a padrone before getting his own permit. A licensee must be native-born, and, since new licenses are not issued, must wait until a colleague gives up a license before getting his own. Their union offers free courses in foreign languages, art history and the history of Venice, but the gondoliers are not given singing lessons - every Italian seems to have a natural talent for song. Join us for a romantic tour through the canals of Venice. Riding just the two of you per gondola, you will traverse the smaller, less trafficked canals, enjoying the soft lights and balconied waterfront homes, and be serenaded as you glide along. A singer and an accordion will accompany one of the gondolas and you will all enjoy the beautiful tunes as you glide along the canals.

  • Dubrovnik - Game of Thrones

    Description

The Old Town is so stunningly striking that it seems to have leapt directly from the pages of George R. R Martin’s addictive series of novels and it is no coincidence that Dubrovnik was also a capital city in its own right – of the now extinct Republic of Ragusa. On this tour, you will be taken through all the parts of the Old City where some of the most memorable scenes from the ongoing cultural phenomenon were filmed, including: The Pile Gate where King Joffrey was faced with a citizens’ riot and pelted with dung. The Lovrijenac fort where the unsuccessful attack on King's Landing, known as the Battle of Blackwater, took place. The seemingly endless fortified walls will be seen from Lovrijenac fortress where Tyrion Lannister and Varys took a stroll. All of the filming locations and commentary from your local guide will be accompanied by large, A4-sized photos that show the screen-shot from the appropriate episode and what took place. Of course, the people of Dubrovnik are also fiercely proud of their own fascinating history which your guide will also inform you about, alongside the Game of Thrones commentary.

  • Rovinj - Istria Truffle Story

    Description

An exclusive SeaDream experience awaits a small group of our guests today. Few areas of the world afford a real search for the "culinary gold" known as truffles, and most truffle farmers are extremely cautious of "trespassers" to protect their valuable crop. The best period to search for the truffles (white truffles) is between October to December, period of year between January to September is good for searching (black truffles) which is little bit lower quality than white truffles. You and your fellow lucky SeaDreamers will be leaving Rovinj by bus toward the Istria Peninsula Hinterland to the village of Paladini where you will meet with the Karlic Family (A grandfather, mother, grandchildren and dogs) at their Farm. The truffle business of the Karlić family from Paladini near Buzet was established last century by Mr Ivan Rašpolić, in 1966 to be exact. Back then Motovun forest was quite bigger than today. Both white and black truffles found in that area were considered to be among the best quality truffles in Istria. However, one of the richest truffle fields now lies at the bottom of the Butoniga lake! At the Farm, your host - Karlic Family - will give an introduction to the truffles and the history of truffles in Istra and their family. You will taste delicious products made of truffles all prepared by the family, including Istrian cheese with truffles, sausages with truffles, truffle patte, honey with truffles, olive oil with truffles. The highlight of tasting is a live interactive presentation of making famous Istrian “fritaja” scrambled eggs with truffles, when you will have the opportunity to join in cooking the fritaja. After tasting, your hosts will take you to a truffle hunt in their own woods where they grow and harvest black truffle. The truffles grow underground and are therefore invisible. However, their strong smell and of course trained dogs recognize them very well. After your truffle experience your land adventure will be going to a medieval town of Motovun. This captivating hilltop town is one of the characteristic symbols of the Istrian interior. The Romanesque-Gothic bell tower with a crenulated crown from the 13th century, standing next to the Parish Church of St. Stephen from the 17th century, dominates the town's historic core. In the central square is the Romanesque Municipal Palace, the largest secular building in Istria of that period surrounded by many other historic buildings. You will enjoy a walk of the town and some free time for exploring this beautiful town before continue your trip back to Rovinj and your SeaDream yacht. A lovely experience and a day that will be remembered!

    Notes

While ever effort is made by the guides to locate truffles (they are invisible!), SeaDream cannot guarantee that they will be found! In an effort to make this Yachting Land Adventure a genuine truffle hunt, we have advised the guides not to 'plant' truffles in the hope that you will enjoy the authenticity of the experience and thrill of the hunt. The period from January through September is considered a good period to search for the black variety while October through December is a better period for white truffles. Please wear flat comfortable walking shoes and remember that you will be walking through forest and other natural surroundings where the path can be muddy. Should it be a hot & sunny day during your visit, please bring protection from the sun and extra water, which is available, complimentary, at the gangway. A minimum participation is required to operate all Yachting Land Adventures and some have limited capacity. Final departures times will be published onboard.

  • Rovinj - Great Wines of Istra

    Description

Istra is known by its delicious truffles, virgin olive oil and great wines. Today you will visit a couple of famous and renowned wine producers in Istra region. The tour starts from the town of Rovinj where you will board your bus to start a scenic drive going inland in Istra, passing through picturesque small villages and hilltop towns before you will reach the village of Vizinade where the Arman Family produces their wine in their vinery. Above the River Mirna, in Narduci, the family tradition is passed down through the generations. Mr. Arman learned from his father, while his children are already preparing to inherit the family heritage. These are some of the best Istrian wines produced from the valuable terrain. The malvasia, chardonnay and the sauvignon blanc have received many awards and golden prizes. The blend of the traditional and modern approach in the production and the presentation of the wine is visible in the cellar of the Arman family which is surrounded by their vineyards. Although you will not stop in the town of Porec, you will stop in the village of Persurici where you will visit one of the most interesting new wineries in Istria. Misal Winery is a family owned business following their family’s centuries-old wine-growing and wine-making tradition. They started productions of natural sparkling wines in modest circumstances. At the beginning, the production was of limited scope with a total of a hundred bottles of one variety of sparkling wine. Creating the recognizable name of Misal, the family can today say that they are one of the largest producers of natural sparkling wine in Croatia. The annual production increased several times over, so nowadays they produce and bottle around 40 thousand bottles of sparkling wine yearly. Visit the winery and find out how sparkling wine is produced, interesting facts about the wine, and the differences between the varieties and how to pair them with certain foods. From Persurici, enjoy a short drive through the Istrian country-side to the village of Sveti Lovrec, where we visit the wine cellar of Matosevic Family – one of the most well-known Croatian Wine Producers. Mr. Matosevic used to say – “Our wine story is not usual and it is not a product of a hundred years old tradition. We are new. We started making wine as a hobby!” After spending some time with the Matosevic family, you are invited to sample their wines, accompanied by some home-made cheese and smoked ham. From there, you will board your coaches and continue back to Rovinj full of great Istrian wines and stories to share.
