Description
Enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience, night-time kayaking in Mosquito Bay, at one of the world’s brightest Bioluminescent Bays.
From the small fishing village of Esperanza, your Yachting Land Adventure (YLA) begins with a short bus ride to Mosquito Bay where you are met by your guides. There they will provide thorough pre-training covering all aspects of the YLA and operation of the kayaks. Once inside your double kayaks and under the blanket of night sky, you will watch the sparkling swirls of water created by the paddles’ flow through the water and search for streaks of light created by darting fish around you. Continue paddling across the bay learning about the mangrove forests, wildlife that inhabits the area and the marine life that uses the lagoon as their sanctuary. Learn what gives this bay its mysterious light and the different ecosystems found in the area. Tiny organisms known as dinoflagellates create the mysterious blue-green light. A trip into the bay is a magical and educational experience not to be missed when in Vieques in the evening.
Notes
This tour is classified as strenuous and requires physical effort, including paddling and potentially walking long distances over uneven or steep terrain and steps. Guests must be physically fit and able to participate without discomfort or difficulty breathing; the experience is suitable for both first-time and experienced kayakers. The tour is not accessible to guests with limited mobility or wheelchair users, and foldable wheelchairs and electric scooters cannot be accommodated. Pregnant women are not permitted to participate. The minimum age is 5 years. Guests with asthma or respiratory conditions must provide a doctor’s note or authorization. Double kayaks are used, with a maximum combined weight of 175 kg (385 lbs) per kayak. Guest weights must be provided, and guests may be weighed before the experience begins. Guests exceeding the applicable weight limit cannot participate, and no refund will be issued. Guests requesting a kayak for one person, or whose combined weight exceeds 175 kg (385 lbs), must provide the relevant details in the optional Booking Number field. Prices are based on two guests per kayak; therefore, two tickets must be purchased when requesting a single kayak. A waiver must be signed before participation. Local transportation, rather than deluxe coaches, is used for the approximately 15-minute transfer to and from the pier, which may travel over gravel and uneven roads. Water shoes or flip-flops are recommended, as guests board the kayak in ankle-deep water. Comfortable clothing that can get wet should be worn. Insect repellent must not contain DEET, a chemical ingredient commonly used in insect repellents. The tour is led by a kayak instructor and does not include a separate guide. This Yachting Land Adventure must be prebooked before embarking the vessel and cannot be canceled once booked; any remaining spaces may be sold onboard, subject to availability. The experience is offered only on moonless evenings and does not operate the day before, the day of, or the day after a full moon. The intensity of the bioluminescence is not guaranteed and may vary due to moonlight, rainfall, wind, tides, and water salinity; dark, calm nights generally provide the best viewing conditions. Phone screens, flashlights, and other artificial light can reduce visibility of the glow, so electronic screens and unnecessary lighting should remain off while on the bay. Mosquito Bay is a sensitive natural reserve; swimming is prohibited, guests must remain inside the kayak throughout the water portion, and nothing should be touched or removed from the water. Noise should be kept to a minimum, and all instructions from the kayak instructor must be followed. The bay is intentionally dark with minimal light pollution, and guests should expect low visibility while walking, boarding the kayak, and moving around the launch area.
A minimum number of participants is required to operate all Yachting Land Adventures, and some may have limited capacity. Please book on the Seadream.com website, or onboard, early to avoid disappointment. All adventures in the SeaDream Yachting Land Adventures program are subject to change. Final departure times will be published on board.
