Description
Anguilla is home to pristine beaches, salt ponds and cays with a wide variety of unique bird viewing possibilities. The island is a pivotal stop for migratory birds as they make their way to and from nesting locations in the north during the spring and fall. The salt ponds were once the center of a thriving salt industry dating back to the Arawak Indians. Today they provide critical habitat for both resident and migratory species as they travel along the Atlantic Flyway. A large number of species including raptors, herons, waders and waterfowl, overwinter on Anguilla providing excellent year-round birdwatching..
On this Yachting Land Adventure guests will be picked up at the pier by their bird loving guide and taken across the island to 2 or 3 of Anguilla's 20 wetlands in search of over 130 species of resident and migratory bird species. The wetlands in Anguilla are the old salt ponds, not used anymore for salt harvesting but were very important to Anguilla’s history and growth. Your knowledgeable guide will also talk about the history and the importance of the wetlands in Anguilla’s history, as well as the importance to the bird breeding colonies. Some more of the birds that can be seen at the wetlands are: Egrets, Yellowlegs, Turnstones, Sandpipers, Willets, Whimbrels, Plovers, and Killdeer. This tour includes transportation, use of binoculars, spotting scope, bird guidebook and bottled water.
