  • Kuressaare, Saaremaa - The Island of Vikings

    Description

Panoramic drive with photo stops. Fish workshop and -lunch at a farm. See the unique ship- burial discovery – the Salme Viking Village

Saaremaa is the biggest island of Estonia, 2922 km2 (1128 square miles) in area, is known as a good recreation place with unique nature and a lot of sights. There are still stone fences and farmhouses with thatched roofs in the villages and peculiar dialectal language are still in use. The tour starts from Saaremaa harbor with a drive to Tihemetsa Farm in Nasva Village. Fish has always been important for islanders. With potatoes and salted fish on the table, people used to get through poor times when food was in scarce. Tihemetsa Farm has been offering fish dishes for over 20 years. In spring, around April, the season begins with a smoked fish. The first spring speaker is a nice little fish Baltic herring. It is also possible to get flounder, perch, and, if the sea is kind, the eel. Listen to the stories about fishing and enjoy fish workshop with seafood lunch and folk musician.

From Tihemetsa Farm continue to Viking Village Salme. Historians estimate that Saaremaa experienced its golden era during the 12th century, when Viking raids and trading voyages had stopped, and Saaremaa became much more influential in military affairs on the Baltic Sea. It is believed that warriors from Saaremaa played an important role in the notorious Pillage of Sigtuna, a major city in Sweden .In 2008, two wrecks of ancient ships were discovered in the ground in Salme rural municipality which changed the course of naval history. This is the oldest shipwreck found in Estonia that dates to the 8th century. The ship was discovered with the skeletal remains of seven people, two swords, a couple of spear heads, about ten knives, gaming pieces and some dice. According to archaeologists, this find is unique in the entire Europe because never before has anyone discovered a so-called warrior burial dating from that period and containing so many fallen warriors. The ancient ships were covered with soil after research was completed. Today, a row of concrete benches indicating the size of the ships and an information board stand at the site.

The tour continues with a drive to Kuressaare, the “capital” of the island, and with a short sightseeing of the town. Its old part, now a protected national heritage, shaped out already at the end of 17th century and has still preserved its centuries-old milieu. Among marvelous sights, the Town Hall, Weigh house, Kuursaal (Beach Saloon), House of the Nobility can be mentioned. But the most important sight in Kuressaare is the Episcopal (Bishop’s) Castle, built of chiselled dolomite blocks in the late 14th century. This is one of the best-survived medieval castles in Baltic States. From Kuressaare drive back to the yacht.

    Description

Sightseeing tour to historical villages that pride in preserving their unique atmosphere. The people have pertained harmony with islands’ nature. Islanders’ aim is to live according to circular economy and be self-sufficient.

Saaremaa, together with other West Estonian islands, belongs to the UNESCO biosphere program area “Man and the Biosphere.” The living environment that has been preserved for centuries, the unique traditions, and the hard-working and humorous people here have received special recognition precisely because they have been able to live in harmony with nature. The forest and the sea play an important role in the diet of the islanders. Juniper is used to make traditional souvenirs, but syrups, soaps, and gin are also made. The circular economy is important, and the local beverage producer decided and gave new life to the Christmas trees in the city center. The tonic was first produced from the Christmas tree in the center of Kuressaare, now the branches and thorns of the Christmas trees in Pärnu, Loviisa, and Helsinki have also been collected and turned into a tonic. Local healthy birch sap is also bottled here, and more than half of the packaging is made of plant material, including cork made from sugar cane.

First drive from the port to the almost 500-year-old Leedri village in Western Saare County. The sightseeing tour of the village will be made by the local guide. Visit also Orbu Farm: juniper syrup masters cook an enchanting delicacy from juniper and sugar, to which they add nuts, berries, herbs, and spices. According to folk belief, juniper provides vitality and health, bringing marine refreshment to the lungs, summer heat to the bones, and power to the voice. Taste juniper syrup in Orbu farm. Continue the tour to Kihelkonna village. The local residents have passed their knowledge and skills on from generation to generation and they know how to survive in every situation. This primeval wisdom must be preserved and valued, as those centuries of experience help us leave the world in a better condition for future generations. Next drive to Mihkli farm complex. It was developed over eight generations of one family with many farm machines and tools which have been mostly manufactured or used by the residents of the same farm. • Mariehamn, Åland Islands - Highlights & Taste of Åland

    Description

Departing from the port you will first get acquainted with the lovely little maritime town of Mariehamn. We will see the towns’ two waterfronts, the tall ship S/Y Pommern and the wooden houses from around the year 1900.

A detour south of Mariehamn takes you over a chain of islands, linked by a road bridge. Enjoy the beautiful archipelago when touring the islands of Järsö from the comfort of your bus, and if you are lucky, you might even get a glimpse of the birdlife.

Continue onwards to the municipality of Sund and make a photostop at the Bomarsund castle ruins. This fortress takes you back to the 19th century and tells the tale of the period of Russion occupation of Åland.
A short drive away we stop at the openair museum Jan-Karlsgården, taking us back about 150 years in time. The guide will show you around the area, with a farm from 1850 being its main part, including a main house, stables and several small sheds and houses used for varying purposes.

After your stroll around the museum grounds, you will walk to Åland Distillery just next door. The distillery tour and tasting includes small glasses of spirits and liqueurs, produced right on the premises. Under the guidance of the distillery staff, you get to try different liqueurs together with some savories. You will learn how the spirits are produced and get to visit the distillery.

After this visit we will return to Mariehamn and your ship. On the way back make you will make a photo stop outside Kastelholm Castle, one of only five existing fortresses in Finland from the Middle ages. From about 1390 and up to the late 18th century it was the central point of the Swedish kings’ administration on Åland.
