Depart Singapore, docked right on Marina Bay itself for chilli crab at Maxwell and the glow of the Supertrees, then set out for the scattered, barely charted Anambas Islands, electric-blue lagoons few large ships reach. Bangka's rose-gold granite boulders and Belitung's UNESCO-recognized seascape of giant granite formations and a historic lighthouse follow, before the smoking cone of Anak Krakatau, still warm underfoot within its 1883 caldera. Ujung Kulon's UNESCO wilderness, the last refuge of the Javan rhino, gives way to the Thousand Islands, a scatter of coral cays off Jakarta reached by almost no cruise ship, where hatchling turtles are released near a 17th-century Dutch fort on Onrust. Jakarta's Dutch-colonial old town and a bowl of soto Betawi precede a long, rewarding inland day from Semarang to Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist monument, its five hundred Buddhas emerging from drifting mist. Karimunjawa's shark-patrolled reefs, remote Bawean's endemic deer and tide-vanishing sandbar, and Surabaya's old Arab and Chinese quarters and its rawon lead to Probolinggo, for a climb into Mount Bromo's smoking Tengger caldera and crater stairs. Bali's quiet northern coast at Celukan Bawang, with its lakeside temple and rice-terrace monastery, brings the voyage to Benoa, where the Island of the Gods, its cliffside Kecak dancers and incense-scented temple gates, awaits your arrival.
