The Coral Sea & the Dragon Isles

Cairns is your threshold to the Great Barrier Reef, a short run out to the outer-reef pontoons and the best snorkeling in Australia. Snorkel the coral gardens of the outer Agincourt Ribbons, drift past clownfish and reef sharks, then trade the sea for the world's oldest rainforest at Daintree, where cassowaries stalk the Kuranda canopy. Toast the day with a chilled Margaret River white as the tender returns. Big ships queue at the pier; you simply dive in.

Lizard Island is the Reef's most exclusive outpost, twenty-four powder-white beaches ringing a granite isle few vessels can reach. Dive the legendary Cod Hole to meet potato cod the size of a Labrador, or snorkel the giant clams at Watsons Bay straight from the swim platform. Hike to Cook's Look for the panorama that showed Captain Cook his escape through the reef. With just 230 aboard, the anchorage feels like your own private atoll. Swimming and non-motorized craft only here; motorized watersports need the local authority's permission.

This small Arnhem Land community changed Australian law from its own church hall, the 1963 bark petitions presented here, painted testimony backed by written text, were the first Indigenous documents recognized by the Australian Parliament and remain a founding document of the land rights movement. The Buku-Larrnggay Mulka art center still represents the Yolngu artists who continue that tradition today, their bark paintings and prints held in major collections worldwide. Sea eagles and other coastal birdlife are abundant along the surrounding shoreline. A community where art and political history are inseparable.

A genuinely wild stretch of the Cobourg Peninsula in western Arnhem Land, reachable only by boat or light aircraft and home to one of Australia's original ecotourism retreats. Saltwater crocodiles patrol the mangroves, while the surrounding monsoon forest and wetlands hold some of the Top End's richest birdlife, jabirus, brolgas and sea eagles among them. Traditional Aboriginal owners still manage much of the land. About as remote and untouched as Northern Territory wilderness gets.

Australia's tropical northern capital carries its Second World War history openly, this was the only Australian city bombed by Japan, in a 1942 raid larger than Pearl Harbor, told in full at the wartime tunnels beneath town. The Mindil Beach sunset markets pair a fire-orange Top End sky with satay and laksa stalls, while jumping-crocodile cruises on the Adelaide River nearby put saltwater crocodiles almost close enough to touch. A golf round in the tropical heat and some of the country's richest birdlife in the surrounding wetlands round out a genuinely frontier city.

West Timor's capital looks and feels different from the rest of Indonesia, a largely Christian city on the edge of a Muslim-majority nation, its markets built around lontar palm sugar and handwoven ikat rather than batik. Sandalwood once made this coast one of the most fought-over in the archipelago, a history still visible in the old Dutch fort. Frigatebirds and terns work the harbor, and a seafood-heavy dining scene reflects the strong Timorese and Rotinese influence on the local kitchen. A genuinely distinct corner of eastern Indonesia.

Bali's quieter neighbor rises to the volcanic cone of Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest peak, its crater lake a multi-day trek for the properly fit. Gili Trawangan's car-free beaches and reef lie a short boat ride offshore, while Sasak villages in the island's interior keep traditional weaving and thatched longhouse architecture very much alive. A wellness and spa culture has grown up quickly around the island's south coast resorts. Bali's calmer, less developed alternative.

Benoa opens the whole of Bali to you. Watch the sun drop behind the sea-cliff temple of Uluwatu as barefoot dancers stamp out the hypnotic Kecak fire ritual, or rise early for the mirror-calm Tegallalang rice terraces above Ubud. Wander incense-scented temple gates, browse the silver workshops of Celuk, and feast on crackling babi guling. Back aboard by evening, you sidestep the resort crowds who never see Bali empty.
