From Montreal, the St. Lawrence carries the yacht toward Quebec City, its UNESCO listed ramparts rising above the only walled city north of Mexico, then on to Tadoussac, where zodiacs venture into the glacier-carved Saguenay Fjord and cold upwellings at its mouth draw belugas and even blue whales close to shore. Round the Gaspe Peninsula to the pierced rock of Perce and the gannet colonies of Bonaventure Island, and call at Charlottetown, birthplace of Canada, its red sand beaches and Anne of Green Gables farmland unfolding beyond a red brick harborfront. A passage through the narrow Strait of Canso leads to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia's UNESCO World Heritage old town of ochre timber houses above a working fishing harbor. Down East Maine follows: tidal Eastport, granite ringed Bar Harbor beneath Acadia's Cadillac Mountain, workaday Rockland, and Portland, its brick Old Port stacked with acclaimed kitchens and craft breweries. Ending in Boston with the red brick Freedom Trail threading from Paul Revere's house to the Old North Church at the birthplace of a revolution.
