Bay of Pigs

Bay of Pigs

The National Park Cienaga de Zapata is an extensive ecosystem made up of mangrove forests, keys, seagrass beds, coral reef barriers and deep reefs. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is abundant with marine life, reptiles and over 175 bird species. It provides the best birding in the country. The excursion continues on to Playa Girón, a small beach located at the eastern end of the Bay of Pigs.

In 1961, Playa Girón was chosen as one of the landing sites for the invasion at the Bay of Pigs. Due to its history and natural beauty, it is one of the most visited locations in Cuba. You’ll learn about the historical relevance of the event while visiting the local museum and view personal belongings of those who fought, weaponry that was used and relevant press articles and important documents.

Next, you will be transferred nearby to Caleta Buena, a protected area of ocean where the water is calm and quite clear, providing fantastic swimming and snorkeling opportunities plus a chance to interact with local Cubans to learn about marine ecology. Snorkeling equipment (tube, mask, fins) is available on site for an additional cost.

To complete your day, enjoy a delicious family style lunch at a local privately owned “paladar” restaurant Casa Enrique. You will have a chance to interact with Enrique, the owner, and a local expert on the region to learn about ecological projects in the area and the challenges of the emerging private sector in Cuba today. After lunch, return to Cienfuegos port.
