Kayak Tour to Jagua Fortress in Cienfuegos Bay

The ancient Castillo de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua (Castle of Our Lady of the Angels of Jagua) is one of the oldest symbols of Cienfuegos city. Located at the entrance channel to the bay, it invites you to travel back in time to the 18th century, when pirates and corsairs roamed these troubling seas. The fortress was declared a National Monument on October 10th, 1978 and opened as a museum on March 24th, 1998.

Your educational exchange adventure today will start at Punta Milpa where you will meet your Cuban regional expert kayak instructors. Before launching the kayaks into the harbor, the instructor will brief you on some safety features and then travel with you to provide an educational overview of the region as you follow a route with a panoramic view of the fortress, a small fishing community and other interesting sites around the harbour. The route borders the east coast of the channel up to the height of Pasacaballo Hotel where you will cross the channel to visit the castle. This history lesson by sea will provide you with an overview of the only Spanish military fortification built at the end of the 18th century and erected by King Felipe V of Spain in 1742 to serve as defense of the bay and the entire south coast of the island against pirates and corsairs.
