Marsala and Wine Tasting
Marsala and Wine Tasting
Leave the pier and drive along the Via del Sale (the Salt Road), passing the historic salt pans and windmills that characterize this coastal landscape. A brief photo stop is made along the route, which also offers panoramic views of Mozia Island. Located just offshore, Mozia was one of the most important Phoenician and Carthaginian settlements in the Mediterranean, owing to its strategic position as a coastal trading center.
Continue to Marsala, located on Cape Boeo at the westernmost point of Sicily. Upon arrival, enjoy a brief walking tour introducing the city’s long and complex history. Founded by Phoenician refugees after the destruction of Mozia by Dionysius I of Syracuse, Marsala later came under Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Muslim, and Norman rule. During the Norman period, beginning in 1072, the city saw the construction of castles, churches, and convents that shaped its urban character.
Marsala is also renowned for the dessert wine that bears its name. Visit the historic Cantine Florio winery for a tour of its wine cellars, followed by a tasting of local wines, including Marsala, accompanied by Sicilian specialties. Re-board the coach for the return journey to Trapani, with a final stop at the Torre di Ligny. Built in 1671, this quadrangular coastal tower offers sweeping views toward the Egadi Islands, as well as the nearby islets of the Lazzaretto and Torre della Colombaia, before continuing back to the pier.
Notes: This tour requires a moderate level of activity, with walking of approximately 600-700 meters (0.4 miles) in Marsala’s town center and 300/400 meters (0.2 miles) at the winery. It is not advisable for wheelchair users as guests must be able to embark and disembark the vehicle independently. Comfortable shoes are recommended. Transfer time is approximately 60 minutes each way.
