Larnaca History & Religion

Visit Larnaca which claims two important religious sites. The crypt where St Lazarus is buried under the church of his name and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque an important pilgrimage center. Also enjoy a tasting of several premium Cyprus wines.

From Ayia Napia you travel to the outskirts of Larnaca to visit the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, which rests on the shores of a Salt Lake that is full of migratory birds and pink flamingos during the winter. Built in 1816 over the tomb of an aunt of the Prophet Mohammed who died here in 649. The stone surmounting of her tomb is said to have flown miraculously from Mount Sinai in Egypt to protect the tomb. Muslim ships sailing within view of the shrine are said to have dipped their colours in honour of the illustrious lady and it is an important pilgrimage centre for Muslims.

Next in Larnaca, you will visit the Church of St Lazarus. After having been resurrected by Jesus, Lazarus travelled to Cyprus where he was ordained Bishop by St Barnabas, a position he is said to have held for 30 years. Lazarus is buried in an accessible crypt to the right side of the altar. The Church dates back to the 9th Century and is one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in Cyprus.

Continue on foot at the nearby Oak Tree Wine Cellar and Tasting room, were you are introduced to the Premium Cyprus wines, where you will taste 6 different wines (2 Red, 2 White, 1 Rose & 1 Commandaria). Enjoy some free time in Larnaca old town centre and seafront promenade before boarding the coach and returning to the yacht.
