The Capelinhos Volcano
Visit the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, an informative, educational and scientific center with a special emphasis on the Capelinhos Volcano eruption and the formation of the archipelago in the Azores.
Depart from Horta in the direction of the Capelinhos Volcano. This volcano is a landmark on Faial, located on the western coast of the island and it is part of the larger complex of Capelo, which includes 20 scoria cones and lava fields. Visit the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre which was constructed underground so it wouldn’t interfere with the pre-existing landscape. Thereby allowing views to fully enjoy this recent volcanic landscape originated from the eruption of 1957/58. The Interpretation Centre has an informative, educational and scientific mission; including exhibitions focusing on Capelinhos Volcano eruption and the formation of the archipelago. They also track other various kinds of volcanic activity around the world and have an exhibit displaying the history of Azorean lighthouses. At the end of the visit you can climb up the lighthouse where you will appreciate the unique surrounding landscape.
