Salt Flats & Los Morillos Lighthouse

Salt Flats & Los Morillos Lighthouse

Visit the Salt Flats that give Cabo Rojo its name, explore the hyper saline lagoon, climb to the top of an Observation Tower, and enjoy a hike highlighted with some bird watching. Afterwards, take a hike to the Faro Los Morillos Lighthouse, for a breathtaking view, including a photo opportunity of “Puente de Piedra” a small naturally formed bridge made of rock, with a brief stop at Playuela Beach.

Boqueron is located in the beach town of Cabo Rojo, which derives its name from both the reddish color of its salt-flats and the reddish tint that characterizes the seaside cliffs along its southern coast. Today you will travel to the Salt Flats for an experience that includes a visit to a small museum with exhibits and information about the ecology and history of this area. Also, you can climb the Observation Tower for an amazing Panoramic View of the Salt Flats and learn about this 500-year-old industry. Next enjoy an easy hike through the dry forest and hyper saline lagoon spotting birds along the way. At the end of this visit, there is time to browse the small gift shop, and see a short video about the reserve. In the gift shop you will receive a sample of salt to take home with you!

From here, we’ll continue to Faro Los Morillos Lighthouse, located in a Natural Reserve. You will depart the vehicle for a short hike to the Lighthouse perched atop a cliff. While the Lighthouse is not normally open, its surroundings offer a breathtaking view of the Caribbean Sea, the rocky cliffs, and the nearby beach. Your guide will also take you for a great photo opportunity of “Puente de Piedra”, a small naturally formed bridge made of rock that has been eroded over the centuries. Be sure to bring your camera to capture these moments and sharing with friends.

Following there will be a short stop at beautiful Playuela Beach for more picture taking, and even getting your toes wet for those who wish before returning to your yacht waiting in Boqueron.

Notes: Please note there are no restroom facilities at Playuela Beach and cover from the sun is limited. Comfortable clothes and non-slippery closed toe shoes, hat, and sunglasses are recommended. Also, please wear sun protection as you will be exposed to the direct sun during the walking portion of the tour.
