Vittoriosa by Boat & On Foot

Vittoriosa by Boat & On Foot

Cross Valletta’s Grand Harbour on a traditional Maltese boat and visit Vittoriosa one of the Three Cities and the cradle of Maltese history.

From the pierside it's just a short walk to board a traditional Maltese boat called a dghajsa. Once aboard, you will cross the harbour that drew Carthaginians and Swabians, Hapsburgs and Aragonese, Romans and Britons to form the nation that it is today.

Disembark at the Vittoriosa jetty for a walking tour through this fascinating and ancient city. Walk past the Freedom Monument and St. Lawrence Church towards the Maritime Museum. The building is in what was the Old Naval Bakery built over the site of an old slipway where the Knights used to repair their ships. Today there is a bustling marina full of sailing boats and super yachts. This amazing setting is the perfect metaphor for the layers upon layers of history that comprise the nation of Malta. As you make your way around your guide will point out buildings that housed the Knights of Malta.

Visit the Inquisitor's Palace - an architectural gem, built in the 1530’s and served as law courts until the 1570’s, when it became the tribunal (and prison) of the Inquisition, whose task it was to find and suppress heresy. Return to Vittoriosa Jetty for your crossing back to Valletta. Do not miss viewing Fort St Angelo from the sea which is the most impressive fortress on the tip of the peninsula. The British took over the fort in the 19th century and for a period served as the headquarters of the Mediterranean Fleet.

Notes: This tour involves strenuous walking over uneven surfaces, steps, and extended periods on foot throughout Vittoriosa and inside the Inquisitor’s Palace. This tour is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for guests with mobility limitations. Participants will board a traditional dghajsa boat, which offers limited shade, no air‑conditioning, and no restroom facilities. Comfortable, non‑skid walking shoes are essential, and a sunhat and sunscreen are advised during warmer months. The tour is weather dependent, and the order of visits may vary. A minimum number of participants is required, capacities may be limited, and all Yachting Land Adventures are subject to change. Final departure times will be published onboard.
